Thank you to all who joined us including Anne Mathieson (President of Alumni Committee), Gael Perry OAM (1962) and Claudette Brennan our College Archivist who provided some memorabilia from Mardi's time here at SHC, helping to make it such a lovely celebration of a special milestone. |

Camino de Santiago: Miffy (Eleanor) Condie (2019) |
|
|
Eleanor Condie (2019) was lucky enough to be selected as part of a group of nine Newman undergraduates to complete the Camino de Santiago, an 11 day route from Portugal to Santiago, in late 2022. Their guide was a delightful priest Fr Sacha, who probably deserves a medal for taking on a group of nine undergrads! At the end of the adventure, the Priest asked Eleanor to write a reflection for the college magazine and it was featured as a double page spread across the middle pages. |

| | | Upcoming Alumni Networking Events |
Sacred Heart College Alumni Association has embarked on a new networking strategy to offer our Alumni members opportunities to attend both career development and community events. | | Westpac Economic Briefing with Chief Economist Bill Evans
The Association provided another opportunity to attend the Westpac Economic Briefing, which included a complementary breakfast, on Thursday 31 August from 7.00am - 9.00am at GMHBA Stadium. The Association purchased a table for this event and our Table Host was Anne Mathieson (McGarry, 1971). There were nine places available for Alumni members. | | Meli's Foster a Future Breakfast The Association provided the opportunity to attend Meli's Foster a Future Breakfast, on Thursday 7 September from 6.45am - 8.45am, at GMHBA Stadium.
Meli is the new organisation which resulted from a merger between Barwon Child Youth and Family (BCYF) and Bethany. It is now a major agency in Geelong and provides a range of support services from early childhood to youth to family. This fundraising event serves as the launch for Meli's annual foster care appeal, which runs throughout the month of September. It is also an opportunity to show appreciation to their wonderful foster carers. Attendees will enjoy a seated breakfast, barista-made coffee, and inspiring guest speaker Saroo Brierley: Celebrating the Importance of Hope. Saroo’s moving story has been told in the autobiographical book A Long Way Home and the film, Lion, starring Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel. The event MC is Myf Warhurst. The Association has purchased a table for this event and our Table Host is Kelly Suvoltos (Hurley, 1991). |

| | Joan Pargeter (Eaton) |
A lovely package made its way to the Archives recently from NSW, received from Robyn Pargeter Roland, daughter of Joan Pargeter (Eaton, 1946). It included Joan’s Life Membership badge, her Dux of Proficiency certificate 1945, a Prospectus, a 1946 Newton Business College Diploma, a 1974 Old Collegians Jubilee Mass booklet and a 1964 Sacred Heart College Appeal Prospectus. Robyn has put together some words on her Mum’s life:
Mum, Joan Pargeter (Eaton) was born in Albury on 19 August 1929. She attended St Brigid’s School, Howlong for her primary years. Just before the war broke out Mum, her parents Ted and Carrie and her brother Frank moved to 11 Eureka Street, Geelong. Frank attended St Joseph’s and Mum attended Sacred Heart, where her love for Mercy sisters continued. Mum named Sister Barbara as her favourite teacher, and maths her favourite subject. Her great friends were Pat Stocks (Skepper, Piercy) Pat Wall, Pat Bolger and Joan McDonald. We heard many stories over the years about Sr Flora McDonald.
Mum completed her Leaving Certificate and the family moved back to Howlong after the war ended and her father took over the running of The Courthouse Hotel. Mum’s dream was to become a teacher but sadly that never eventuated, as she was to work at AE Hamilton’s general store. Alice Evelyn Hamilton, the store owner, was Mum’s much-loved aunt. Mum worked in ‘the shop’ until she married local farmer Lloyd Pargeter in 1956. They were the first couple to marry at the new St Brigid’s Church. She moved to the farm, ‘Hillsborough’ and together they raised seven children. | |
Mum lived a faith-filled life. She was on the executive of the Catholic Women’s League in Howlong for many, many years and taught scripture on a voluntary basis at Howlong Public School for over 30 years. Up until she died, ex-students would stop Mum and make themselves known to her - there was no need as Mum remembered every student she taught. Mum had a phenomenal memory.
Mum was also a member of the executive of several community groups ranging from The Hall Committee to the craft group. She especially loved watching her sons and grandsons play footy for Howlong and rarely missed a game. She was also a one-eyed Cats supporter and she kept an eye on the scores every weekend. Mum sewed our clothes, baked sponges and knitted countless bootees and matinee jackets for her grandchildren. She made beautiful baby blankets for each of them to cherish. Mum’s legacy is her seven children, all of whom live locally in Howlong or Albury. She had 15 grandchildren and delighted in her six great grandchildren. She never missed their birthdays. A life well lived, Mum was a respected member of the Howlong community, and she is missed. Mum is buried with her beloved Lloyd in the Howlong cemetery. |
| Leaving Group Back row (from left): Mary Jackman, Veronica Ryan, Joan Melican, Flora MacDonald and Dorothy Bartels. Middle row: Joan Eaton, Joan Turner, Ursula Pascoe, Nell Widdison and Marie Brosnan. Front row: Nancy Harrower, Elizabeth Bendle, Margaret O'Loughlin, Joan Bartels and Gleed Steinfort.

| Did you know? | When the school opened in 1860 there was no set uniform and students wore the ‘fashion of the day’. Dress was demure and students wore dresses with full skirts, petticoats, pantaloons and buttoned ankle boots. Jackets were plain, and as was the style a small peplum was attached at the waist.
The first formal uniform was introduced in the 1920s and students were required to wear a navy blue tunic, pleated at the front and back, a white blouse, a navy tie and black stockings and shoes. It wasn’t until the 1930s a new uniform was introduced that included a crested blazer and crested blue felt hat. | | A & B basketball teams, 1940
